Tip Sheet #7
I trust you have noticed that the last several tip sheets spoke to behaviors at work. My plan is to continue discussing this topic for the next several weeks. It is always positive to take a step back and reflect about how others may see you in the work environment. I also hope that you share these articles with those that are new to the workforce such as recent college graduates.
Communication in the workplace
Being successful at work requires one to navigate many different relationships. I know in a school it is all about relationships. Making relationships, nurturing relationships and mending fragile relationships are key skills to master. Most problems at work can be traced directly back to a failure to communicate. I ask you to reflect on the following guidelines:
- Treat everyone with respect.
- Watch your language. Do not use profanity and stay away from adult jokes.
- Never use discriminatory remarks, even in poorly placed humor. Insensitive comments can include comments about race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.
- Speak only for yourself. Never volunteer others.
- Do not interrupt people or speak too long.
- Maintain and respect confidentiality.
- Keep your commitments regarding time and work completion.
- Respect all boundaries, both physical and social.
- Observe and respect other’s work space.
- Pay attention to what was said and use good listening skills.
- Do not gossip or talk about others or repeat stories that you have heard.
- Seek clarification, when in doubt ask the right question.
- Never be afraid to admit you made a mistake. Accept responsibility and ensure it does not happen again.
- Do not talk about religion, politics, romantic relationships, health problems or your sex life.
- Be aware of your own body language and properly read the body language of others.
- Do not force your value judgments on others.
- Avoids stereotypes.
- Avoid power struggles.
- Be clear and get to the point.
- ALWAYS BE POSITVEI IN YOUR DEMEANOR AND ACTIONS.
